Music of the Moment

Today's Topic Suggestions:
  • What book and/or music defines today's world for you?
  • Share a piece of contemporary writing or music
  • What is modern writing or music?
  • Does it matter to you what music or books are currently popular?

Today's World As I See It

What today's world would like us to be from 'Interesting Times' by Terry Pratchett:
Lord Hong was flying a kite. It was something he did perfectly.
Lord Hong did everything perfectly. His water-colours were perfect. His poetry was perfect. When he folded paper, every crease was perfect. Imaginative, original, and definatly perfect. Lord Hong had long ago ceased persuing perfection because he already had it nailed up in a dungeon somewhere.
Lord Hong was twenty-six, and thin, and handsome. He wore very small, very circular steel-rimmed spectacles. When asked to describe him, people often used the word 'smooth' or even 'lacquered'. And he had risen to the leadership of one of the most influential families in the Empire by relentless application, total focusing of his mental powers...

How many people in today's world actually seem to feel:

A Culture of Music & Literature

Today's Topic Suggestions:
  • What music and/or which books have influenced your life?
  • Tell us about your culture's music and/or literature
  • Tell us about a favourite cultures music or books

Britain Through The Olympics

OK, so you probably thought my blog was going to be an Olympic-free zone. Well, here's just my little hint towards what's been going on in the UK for the last few months.

I was really impressed when watching the opening and closing ceremonies on TV how much British music and literature featured. It was also interested to see what music and books they chose to feature.
So, here's just a quick glimpse into what the Olympic organisers thought our musical and written culture was:

Books
A large section of the opening ceremony concentrated on children's literature. This included J.K. Rowling, Peter Pan and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang amongst others. I must say that I thought this section very amusing and great at showing how such books have been recognised world-wide. Another (very funny) section featured James Bond. Shakespeare was also briefly mentioned in both the opening and closing ceremonies.
You can watch the relevant sections here:
             James Bond
             J.K. Rowling etc

Music
Many people have refered to the closing ceremony as pretty much a pop/rock concert. Some of my favourite highlights included Take That performing, and John Lennon and Freddie Mercury 'singing' via screens. And, of course, 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' was hilarious! I also enjoyed the Madness section in the opening ceremony.
But, I wasn't totally sure of their choice of musicians to represent England. Of those chosen at least 2 had criminal records and 2 used to be well-known drug-takers. A couple of the songs also didn't seem particularly relevant to the ocassion, seemingly to only be there because those that performed them well well-known.
Anyway, make up your own mind. You can use the links to help if you like:
           Take That
           Eric Idle (Monty Python)
           Queen
           Wonderwall
           Spice Girls
           John Lennon

So, what do you think?
And what music/literature would you use to represent your country?

Journalling a Personal History of Music

Today's Suggested Topic:
  • Share a period of your life through the music of the time
  • Write a diary entry from a certain period of your life, focusing on music you've heard
  • Tell us about how your musical tastes have changed other time
  • Make a list of artists/songs that have influenced your life

The Artists That Helped Me Grow Up

Childhood:
Listening to my parents records. The music I rememember most was Cliff Richard and the Shadows. I know Simon and Garfunkel & The Beatles came in their somewhere as well.
I used to have a tape which billed itself as Children's Classics but was full of songs with lots of innuendo in them. They included comedy songs like 'I'm a pink toothbrush, you're a blue toothbrush', 'The Hippopotamus Song' and 'Right Said Fred'. It also had 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Puff the Magic Dragon' on it. I think 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' may have been featured as well.

Teenage Years:
When all my friends started becoming interested in boy groups, I decided that I had to find one enjoyed as well. This was the beginning of my crush on Take That. My favourite band member was Mark Owen and I used to hve a poster of him above my bed. I was gutted when they split up, having become a fan quite late and only having experienced the last couple of albums.
For a while I listened to the Radio 1 Charts and watched Top of The Pops in the hope of finding another group that I liked, but was mostly unsuccessful.
Eventually I decided I wanted to be different from other people. I'm not quite sure what made me choose Steps as my rebellion band, maybe it was their energy that attracted me. Not too proud of this period now.

Onwards and Upwards
I was watching 'Party At The Palace' when I first noticed Brian May's fantastic guitar playing. This led me to find out who his band were and I quickly became a Queen fan. My favourite member continued to be Brian as I joined the official forums and, finally, the fan club.
It was thanks to Queen that I started exploring different classic rock artists. I became interested in Bowie and, later, Status Quo. If anyone asks me what music I prefer nowadays I always say Classic Rock.

What's playing in my car?
A whole range of things really depending on where I am, what mood I'm in, and what speed I'm likely to be travelling at. Choices include new Take That stuff, Brian May solo albums, music from the musicals and The Beatles. To these may be added other music from my collection as and when the moment takes me.
I love having a range of music available and being able to look back on what's inspired me in the past.

How about you?

Music Book Review: Songs of the Voyageurs by Emily-Jane Hills Orford

Today's topic
Review any book that contains music or a topic related to music. This doesn't  need to be a new review, you could re-post or link to an old one.

Songs of the Voyageurs by Emily-Jane Hills Orford

Blurb:
The begining of European music in this country began with the voyageurs who opened up the land for future settlers. As these men (and sometimes women) paddled their way across this great land, they sang. Music was a source of entertainment, a means to ease the tedium of life in the wilderness and a way to keep the strokes of the paddle in time with one's fellow voyageurs. It was a hard life; but music carried the voyageurs across thousands of miles of uncharted territory.

My review:
A fascinating book with a good balance between piano scores/song lyrics and tales of their origins or history in Canada. It was relly interesting to look at those that were familiar and learn new verses or more about them, as wel as finding a few new tunes. Translation of songs originally in French are also useful.
